Workout Update – April 4, 2012

This is my first workout post, only three days in so there is little to report but I made a promise and feel I should follow through on that promise.

As you know from my first workout post, I was astonished at how much strength I had lost.  The other thing I should note is how sore I was because I was back to lifting weights, something I hadn’t done in months, quite a few months.

Tuesday I got home at 615 and hopped on my bike.  Sunset was at 7:12 so I only had about an hour to get out there and explore Quincy.  I managed to ride 10 miles in 40 minutes, a 15 mile per hour clip.  That’s the fastest I have averaged on this new bike.  My main struggles has been with the clip in pedals.  Growing up with mountain bikes I never felt insecure on a bike.  If you were tipping or turning or just needed to regain your balance you could always stick your foot out.  With a road bike if you try to use your foot for balance by putting it out, you end up tipping the bike with you.  Not so great while you’re circumnavigating between moving vehicles, right?  So I’ve started to get used to that and also starting.  When I’m at a light I now only clip out of one pedal and move my other foot to the top, giving me a half rotation to get going and some time to clip in and get going.  At the beginning, I’ll be honest, I almost rode right into traffic and made the obituary section.

If you’re a rider or even a runner, I would suggest downloading iMapMyRide, it’s a free application for the iPhone and will show you on GPS where you’ve gone.  It will give you the estimated calories and distance traveled.  All three of those are great motivators for anyone who is training alone.  I’m one who likes to explore so it’s nice to see where I have traveled so I can try new routes and new towns to ride through on my bike.

I have 15 more miles to go this week.  Shouldn’t be too hard, I plan to do so the remainder this Saturday.

My First Challenge

It’s April 1st, so it would make sense to start my first challenge today, right?

As I mentioned in my opening post, I will be focussing on three topics during my challenges:

  • Get my finances in order
  • Get in shape and improve my health
  • Improve my status at my firm

For my first challenge I will focus on the first two, Finances and Health as I believe those will both reduce my stress level which should translate naturally into basic improvements at my firm.

First the finances:

After all my fixed expenses, rent, phone, cable/internet, Netflix, etc. I have about $475 a week of extra money that I can spend.  Shouldn’t be too hard to sock away some money, right?  Well I have struggled with that my whole life, through just wreckless spending.  I enjoy going out with friends and having a good time as I believe most people do.  This has unfortunately taken a toll on my savings.  It’s time for me to buckle down as I’m interested in buying a condo in the next two years.

I’m going to set a meager goal over these next 6 weeks.  I am going to save $1,500.  That’s $250 a week.  This means I can average spending $32.14 a day in personal indulgence.  What’s my plan?  During the week I plan to stay in and read/study and workout more.  The biggest torpedo to my saving money in the past has been going out with friends for dinner and drinks after work.  If I cut that out I figure this goal will be no problem.

Second, getting in shape:

I lifted weights today and was shocked at the amount of muscle I had lost:

  • Bent over row: 3 sets of 10 at 35lbs each dumbbell
  • Chest Fly: 3 sets of 10 at 35lbs each dumbbell
  • Bicep Curls: 3 sets of 10 at 20lbs each dumbbell

My goal is to improve both the back and chest exercises by 15lbs over these six weeks and the bicep curls by 10lbs while maintaining the amount of sets and reps.

I am also training for the Pan Mass Challenge an amazing event to raise money for The Jimmy Fund.  I recently purchased a road bike, a 2011 Trek 1.5, to assist me in my journey.  I plan to ride a total of 150 miles including one ride of 30 miles or more over the next six weeks.  It is still cold in Boston so I will use a stationary bike to assist me in achieving my goal on days when mother nature doesn’t comply.

I plan to write updates on my training on Wednesday nights and updates on my finances on Sunday mornings.  Next Sunday I will show you my strategies of an easy way I’ve developed to tracking my finances on a weekly basis.  My strategy is basic and more of a broad overview of I spent X today therefore I saved Y.  In the past I have developed elaborate spreadsheets that breakdown exactly what I spent, where, the date, it was overbearing and honestly, too much detail.

My Life

Thank you very much for taking an interest in my blog!

I’m a 25 year old financial professional who works and lives in the Boston area.  I went to a business school west of Boston and graduated in 2008 with a Bachelors in Finance.  I had a really close circle of friends from Freshman year who are still my friends today.  After college, we all started jobs in different parts of the country but keep in contact constantly by our email chain.  Some days there are only one or two emails and some days there could be 100.  It’s just a running conversation and I think has all helped us adapt to the first few years after college which are a shock for most.  I’ve heard people say the first year out of college is the worst year of their lives.  I would disagree (only because now you have a paycheck) but I certainly see their side.

After college I took a job at a small wealth management firm in the financial district of Boston.  We services high net worth individuals (those with over $10,000,000 in assets).  I started in the operations group doing trading and paperwork and after a little over a year moved onto the client side where I speak with clients and interact with them in meetings regularly.  I am currently studying for my CFP so I can move up the ladder at my firm and become a greater asset to my clients and their needs.

I’m interested in writing a blog to publicly achieve these three goals:

  • Get my finances in order
  • Get in shape and improve my health
  • Improve my status at my firm
I will go into details about all three of the above in follow up posts.  I believe if you just say general things as I just did above you will not have any guidance and ultimately fail at your goals in life.  In the past I’ve also tried to do many things and ended up failing, I believe because I never had anyone to hold me accountable and I feel, albeit selfishly, this will help me follow through with my goals.
I’d like to note that a large inspiration for this blog has come from reading Nerd Fitness a blog by Steve Kamb.  I stumbled across his blog six months ago as he is friends with a co-worker of mine.  He’s done some amazing things with his life and I would certainly recommend his blog to anyone who is interested in fitness, travel, and just improving your life.  I do plan on implementing one of his very popular challenges, The Six Week Challenge as I try to improve my life.
I hope to take this journey with others that I will meet through expressing myself honestly and openly through this medium.
